German Recipes
my brother and I, .....
….we have been talking a lot about our childhood and what we used to eat as kids.
So I started a series called German Treats on TikTok, if you follow me on Facebook & or Instagram, I will be posting those videos there as well.
One of the dishes I made is called Brömmel, now the funny thing is that I can not find this dish under this name anywhere, so we must have made up the name.
My mom is not around anymore so we can not ask her and my dad doesn’t seem to remember (though I am contemplating making a small batch and seeing if eating it will trigger any memories of this dish).
Brömmel are basically the easiest dinner to make, ground meat (we use a mixture of ground pork & beef here in Germany), finely diced onion, and salt, and pepper mixed and placed on a baguette, and topped with a dash of ketchup. Then you bake the whole thing for about 20 minutes at 400F and viola you have dinner done.
This will definitely be added to my Gen Z cookbook!
All you have to clean is a bowl, a knife, and a cutting board!
We had a salad on the side because we are trying to add more vegetables to all of our meals. I served it with raw kohlrabi and fennel…. not the best side for this dish but I had a busy day. My brother calls it “rabbit food”, but he ate it. :)
There was this super cute moment when my brother came into the kitchen and said “it smells like it is supposed to smell” - isn’t it amazing how memories can be unlocked by smell?

If you have any ideas about German foods you want me to make and record, let me know. Even if you don’t know the name but remember eating it, I will try to figure it out for you.
Here is the recipe if you prefer not to watch the video:
Brömmel
Ingredients:
1 baguette
1 pound ground beef, or a mixture of ground beef and pork
One medium size onion diced
Half a teaspoon salt
Half a teaspoon ground pepper
Ketchup
Instructions:
Slice the baguette into Half inch slices and placed on a parchment paper-covered cookie sheet.
Preheat oven to 400°F
In a mixing bowl place the ground beef and diced onion, salt and pepper. Mix the meat mixture and then place 1 to 2 tablespoons of mix mixture on top off the bucket slices.
Top the meat with some ketchup.
Bake for 20 to 25 minutes until the internal temperature of the meat is 160°F.
Guten Appetit!
I can’t wait for summer camps to start and cook with your kids again! If you haven’t signed up for our culinary summer camps, there is still time!
