Bake Austin Newsletter May 19th A little history about cupcakes Cupcakes go back as far as 1796! It is hard to imagine. In the early 19th century they were either called cup cake or cupcake. These cakes were baked in small ramekins or pottery cups, hence the name. In England they are known as fairy cakes, but hey are usually smaller and have no icing. Actually in Germany we did not have cupcakes at all until recently. Germans seem very excited about american cookies and cupcakes. (I am often being asked for recipes by family and friends).
